Cybercrime & Computer Forensics

Cybercrime & Computer Forensics

Cybercrime refers to crimes committed through the network.

A broad category that includes web defamation, online child pornography, the development and spread of viruses up to identity theft and industrial espionage, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, computer fraud, information warfare, phishing.

It is one of the areas of greatest growth in crime worldwide according to Interpol which reports that cyber attacks on individuals and companies, the first work mainly of individual hackers, today are increasingly the preserve of organized crime.

The cost of cybercrime for the world economy between 2007 and 2008 is estimated at $ 8 billion.

To adequately assist the subjects accused of these crimes, and to protect the victims, it is necessary, in addition to knowing and deepening the substantive criminal law institutions that regulate the matter, to possess skills in digital forensics

Digital forensics

Digital forensics is the forensic science that deals with the processing of digital data of any type in order to detect computer evidence useful for investigative and procedural activities:

computer forensics, or disk forensics deals with the treatment of computers, laptops, hard drives, pendrives, DVDs, CDs …
mobile forensics deals with forensic analysis of smartphones, tablets, mobile phones and any other mobile device
the network forensics deals with analyzing and intercepting electronic traffic and correlating events on various systems connected to the network
image forensics is concerned with improving the quality of images and videos in order to extract information from them
embedded forensics deals with “non-traditional” devices such as burglar alarms
vehicle forensics concerns the forensic analysis of vehicles.

In particular, all activities related to

computer crimes in the strict sense (such as abusive access to a computer system)
crimes committed with IT devices (e.g. defamation via the Internet)
any other action that can be reconstructed thanks to computer data stored in some computer system (for example, SMS recovery for a terrorist attack)

Vaira Law Firm, over the years, has gained specific skills in the sector, thanks to the systematic participation of the owner, Avv. Michele Vaira, in the work of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
